As part of the Erasmus+ DJ4CA project, during workshops on data journalism in climate education, students conducted an experiment examining the effect of everyday products on pH levels. Using indicators, they analyzed substances such as lemon, vinegar, soft drinks, fruit teas, soap, and cleaning agents. By observing the color changes of the indicator, they were able to determine whether a substance was acidic or alkaline.
The experiment demonstrated that many common products can impact the natural environment. When these substances enter the sewage system or soil, they can alter the pH of water and land, affecting living organisms and the balance of ecosystems.
The activities helped students better understand the connection between chemistry and everyday choices, raising awareness that even simple actions at home can have environmental significance.
